After more than twenty years of activity, the Clever Square keeps resurfacing in new forms, stubbornly alive. Across its long path, the band has kept circling the loose constellation of American indie rock — absorbing and reshaping it, once again, into a language of its own.
The record moves through flashes of uncertain places, figures at the edge of the frame, details that linger while everything else fades. A quiet tension runs through the songs — not exactly nostalgia, not quite unease: more a thin line of melancholy running beneath everything, like the aftertaste of something that was there but is now out of reach.
“Flicker and Fade” doesn’t offer explanations. It leaves fragments instead: brief images, passing sparks that stay somewhere in the back of your mind long after the last note is gone. Small traces, but persistent ones — much like Clever Square itself.
