It’s been a while since I painted a cover for “It’s Time To Leave This World Behind” by de portables. I started working on this series in 2012.
I don’t want to know how many covers I’ve painted since then, but I’ve definitely done about ninety for this album…
Regenbomen, the song that inspired the series, is a tribute to Peter Jefferies’ “On An Unknown Beach.”
The song is in Dutch and here’s an English translation of the lyrics:
“Regenbomen”
Purple waves rolling on the glittering sand
Rainbow trees glowing, what a wondrous strand
“You’re drunk” says a man, standing on the shoreline
But who is he addressing? He’s all on his own…
“Go home, feathered friend!”
And then we both see:
He talks to a bird,
A little white parakeet.
The man turns to us:
“Help me bring this bird home,
It doesn’t live far, on a beach just nearby”
And right as we speak, the coast tram arrives.
We buy the bird a ticket and we all wave goodbye
