Jim Flora’s cover for Louis Armstrong’s “Louis Armstrong And His Hot Five Vol. 2” sits right at the crossroads of jazz and mid century graphic rebellion.
Collectors and designers often cite Flora’s jazz covers as foundational in album art history. I painted the one above on request, I substituted Louis with Phil Yates and it’s part of the series I’m doing for “No Need To Beg” by Phil Yates & The Affiliates.
The idea is to take a masterpiece and turn it into a “No Need To Beg” cover. I’ve already plundered so many artists and “yatesified” their works.
Phil in the song “Masterpiece” sings:
“I wish I was a canvas so you could throw your paint on
Then I’d be something that you love you’d never wish for me to be gone
You could do with me whatever you please
Hang me up I’d be your masterpiece”
